Community Solutions’ Statement on Recent Racial Violence

August 27, 2017

As an organization and as a group of people working together, and with communities, to create a more just society, the violence and hate on display in Charlottesville and other cities in recent weeks goes to the heart of our work and what we are fighting for at Community Solutions. We stand against this violence and the groups, beliefs and mythologies that are motivating it.

Further, we stand behind those who name and speak out against racism in all its forms. People of color are disproportionately likely to experience homelessness and other aspects of poverty in America. It also takes far longer for people of color to find permanent solutions to their housing needs. These measurable and systematized disadvantages, while sometimes unintentional or obscured, are a direct result of a history of racism that our housing, health and human service systems continue to reflect, revise and reproduce.

We celebrate the life and mourn the death of Heather Heyer, and stand with those in Charlottesville and throughout the country who are doing the day-to-day work of strengthening their communities by building a more just and equal society in which there are no barriers to safety and opportunities for people of color. We commit ourselves to this effort and to supporting those builders.
