DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL: Nonprofit invests nearly $20M in apartments for Denver veterans

June 28, 2022

A nonprofit focused on ending homelessness in the U.S. is making moves in Denver, recently purchasing two local apartment buildings for veterans struggling with housing.

Community Solutions, a nonprofit based in New York, has purchased two buildings at 2850 S. Federal Blvd. and 2880 S. Federal Blvd. in Denver for $12.6 million and $7.2 million respectively. Known as Avon North And Avon South, the buildings have a combined 99 living units, primarily offering one-bedrooms layouts.

“We think the location is good; it’s near amenities and near to where we know veterans want to be housed,” said Dave Foster, manager of Community Solutions Large Cities Housing Fund.

According to Community Solutions, 395 veterans in the Denver metro area did not have housing as of June 1. Of that group, 100 veterans have access to a voucher or governmental housing assistance but cannot find housing because of Denver’s fast-moving and tight housing market.

Avon North and Avon South will Community Solutions’ model of offering approximately 50% to houseless veterans, while the other half of the units will be available at market-rate rent.
